Another Singapore Fling
filed by Bian-lian Huang
Singapore is one of the richest -- if not the richest -- country in the world. As its wealth skyrockets, the reverse is true for the public morality of Singapore's leaders. The Speaker of the Singaporean parliament, a senior politico in this steamy, autocratic republic, recently resigned from all official positions because of a sex scandal. This scandal is one of many recent sexscapades taking place among the tiny republic's politicians and senior civil servants.
Unlike the mistresses of Western politicians, Mr. Michael Palmer, aged 44, hooked up with a cutie. I would do her too.

S'porean Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer, 44, quits over sex scandal
The next morning, Mr Palmer met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who agreed that the proper thing to do was for Mr Palmer, who is the Member of Parliament for Punggol East Single Member Constituency (SMC), to admit his mistake openly and take responsibility by stepping down.
"We took the last two days to make the arrangements to ensure that residents of Punggol East (constituency) continue to be taken care of, and that the transition is carried out according to the proper legal and administrative procedures," said Mr Teo at a press conference held early yesterday afternoon.
"On behalf of the party and of myself, I would like to say to the residents of Punggol East: 'I am very sorry that we have let you down. I assure you that we will put things right and continue to look after you'."
This was the shocking revelation made to reporters at the press conference held at the PAP headquarters in New Upper Changi Road.
The sombre atmosphere which filled the small room grew heavier as Mr Palmer, 44, shed light that it was a staff member of the People's Association (PA) branch at Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC that he had an affair with.
He provided little detail of who the woman was, instead saying that he resigned to take responsibility for a "grave mistake" he made. Wearing a severe frown, he added that his conduct was "improper" and that he had made "a serious error of judgment".
"While the individual did not work with me directly, Punggol East used to be part of the GRC and continues to work with it. My conduct was improper," said Mr Palmer. "I have resigned in order to avoid further embarrassment to the PAP and Parliament."
The PA said in a statement last evening that the constituency director of its Pasir Ris West Constituency Office, Ms Laura Ong, resigned from her position on Monday. She had cited family commitments as her reason for leaving.
My Paper understands that Ms Ong is the woman whom Mr Palmer had an affair with.
Apologising "unreservedly" to the residents in his constituency, colleagues and his own family, Mr Palmer added that he had performed his professional duties to the best of his abilities and that his actions did not affect how he carried out his duties. Mr Teo said that in the interim, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Mayor of the North East District, Mr Teo Ser Luck, will oversee Punggol East constituency.
MP Zainal Sapari will be appointed as the new chairman of Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, while Deputy Speaker of Parliament Charles Chong will serve as Acting Speaker until Mr Lee nominates a new Speaker when Parliament meets on Jan 14.
In a letter yesterday to Mr Palmer, Mr Lee said that it is with "great sadness" that he accepted his resignation and apologies.
He added that it is necessary that all PAP MPs and Advisers to Grassroots Organisations "uphold highest standards of personal conduct" and for "the party to be seen to hold them to these standards". Mr Teo Chee Hean also said that while the PAP does its best to choose its representatives carefully, no selection system is foolproof.
He said: "Sometimes, problems may emerge many years after an appointment or selection is made. The important thing to do when such an episode arises is that we act properly."
Assistant Professor Eugene Tan of the Singapore Management University's law faculty said that the PAP moved swiftly to address the matter, unlike a similar incident involving the Workers' Party's Yaw Shin Leong, who vacated his seat in Hougang in February.
Dr Tan, who is also a Nominated Member of Parliament, said: "Mr Yaw's expulsion from WP was more because he was non-cooperative with the inquiry. WP did not come out to state clearly enough that they would not tolerate such conduct."

Slutty Taiwanese in "Train Sex" Scandal
from: www.asiaone.com
TAIWAN - A 17-year-old girl who allegedly took part in a sex party on a train that took place on the afternoon of February 19 appeared in a Taiwanese court to tell her side of the story.
An Apple Daily report said the girl, known only as 'Xiao Yu', admitted to engaging in sexual activity on a train travelling from Taipei to Zhunan in Miaoli County with at least seven to eight people during the February 28 hearing.
Her parents were reportedly shocked when they heard of her role in the sex scandal. Her mother broke down while her father kept repeating the word "impossible".
'Xiao Yu' later realised her mistake and started to cry.
Taiwanese police later made public the case exhibits, which included the outfit that Xiao Yu wore, and condoms, mouth wash, hand sanitisers and tissue paper that were reportedly used during the train journey
The scandal was exposed after a legislator of Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party alleged that 18 men rented a train carriage and had a sex party with a single young woman.
The 17-year-old girl allegedly had sex with all the men.
The male participants were asked to pay NT$800 (S$34) to be admitted into the party inside the train carriage at around 3.20 pm local time.
Some 10 minutes later, two female assistants distributed condoms and mouthwash to them.
When a woman, 170 centimeters tall and weighing 50 kilograms, allegedly 'Xiao Yu', showed up in the train carriage, the men were at loss for what to do, before the organiser, known as Mr Cai, showed them how to flirt with her during the journey.
She allegedly engaged in sexual activity with all 18 men, who paid the admission fee, before the train reached Zhunan Station.
Cai was arrested earlier for violating public decency.

Indo Pop Star Jailed for Prurient Sex Tapes

(UKPA) – 13 hours ago
One of Indonesia's best-known pop stars has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars after sex tapes featuring his celebrity girlfriends found their way to the internet, riveting and dividing this predominantly Muslim nation.
Liberals said the embarrassment suffered by Nazril "Ariel" Irham - who insists the videos were not intended for public viewing - was punishment enough. But hard-liners were outraged, saying the singer was contributing to the country's moral decline.
Hundreds charged the gates of the courthouse in the city of Bandung after the verdict was read out, yelling "Too light! Too light," as he sped off in an armoured police car. Police fired warning shots to break up a scuffle between his supporters and critics.
Ariel, lead singer of the country's most popular band, Peterpan, was the first celebrity to be charged under Indonesia's strict anti-pornography law, which came into effect in 2008 despite strong opposition from the public and members of government.
It is seen by many as vaguely worded and as carrying overly harsh penalties.
Ariel insists the tapes were stolen from his house and posted online without his knowledge, but presiding Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso said the pop star did nothing to prevent them from spreading online.
He sentenced him to three-and-a-half years years in jail - well short of the maximum 12 years - and fined him £15,000.
"As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behaviour," said Judge Prakoso, adding that the frontman for Peterpan - also popular in neighbouring Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei - did not show remorse.
His supporters were devastated. "He's just a victim," said Roslawati, 30, as tears streamed from his eyes. "He didn't post that video."
Indonesia, a secular country of 237 million people, has more Muslims than any other country in the world. Though most are moderate, analysts suggest a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

Sexy Indo Hunk On Trial for Sex Video
JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesian pop star Nasriel Irham on Monday appeared in court after two homemade sex tapes released on various websites resulted in him being charged under Indonesia's 2008 Anti-Pornography Law.
Irham, 29, who is also known as Ariel, is suspected of appearing in two separate homemade sex tapes involving his current girlfriend, TV presenter Luna Maya, 27, who accompanied Irham to court, and actress Cut Tari, 33, known for her roles in Indonesian soap operas.
All three have denied accusations, but only Irham - who has been in custody since surrendering to police on June 22 - is facing charges, which include distribution of pornography.
Irham, frontman for Indonesian music group "Peterpan," has been dubbed by various media outlets as "Peterporn," as the scandal has stirred Indonesians nationwide.
While the hard-line Islamic People's Forum demand harsh punishment against Irham, several hundred fans gathered outside the court, screaming in support of his liberation.
If convicted, Irham could be facing a prison term of up to 12 years and a fine of up to Rr 6 billion ($672,000).

William Hague may resign over gay aide claims
By James Lyons 3/09/2010
William Hague was battered by Tory grandees yesterday questioning his judgment over the decision to share hotel bedrooms with a young aide.
The Foreign Secretary's party weighed in after his extraordinary statement - denying he was gay - failed to end the storm over his relationship with Christopher Myers.
Friends suggested a disillusioned Mr Hague could be set to leave Government.
One said: "William lives and breathes politics but recently has not looked like a man whose heart is it in it for life."
At a Foreign Office press conference, a grim-faced Mr Hague, 49, said of Mr Myers, 25: "He is clearly someone who is rather fed up with politics and who can blame him?"
Mr Hague said he understood the younger man's decision to resign as a special adviser because of the strain placed on his family by unfounded allegations about the pair.
Mr Myers resigned on Wednesday when Mr Hague released his statement admitting the two had shared hotel rooms but denying anything improper.
The minister also insisted his marriage to Ffion, 42, was strong despite heartache over unsuccessful attempts to start a family. He said he had never been in a relationship "with any man".
The wealthy former Tory leader hoped the declaration would put paid to allegations sparked by the Guido Fawkes political gossip website and draw a line under it all.
But he faced a barrage of fresh questions after senior Conservatives, led by ex-Cabinet minister John Redwood, accused him of a lack of judgment.
The Foreign Secretary, faced reporters at yesterday morning's press conference with his German counterpart Guido Westerwelle, who is, coincidentally, gay.
EXPERIENCE
Mr Hague, whose personal fortune is estimated at over £2million, refused to say why he decided to share a room with Mr Myers.
He said: "I made a very personal statement, which was not an easy thing to do. I am not going to expand on that today.
"My wife and I felt we had had enough of the circulation of untrue allegations, particularly on the internet, and at some point you have to speak out about that and put the record straight."
He also declined to respond to criticism from fellow Tories or reveal why he decided to appoint Mr Myers, who has no experience of foreign affairs, to the post paying £30,000 a year.
Mr Hague insisted: "I think everything else was covered in what I said yesterday and I don't want to add to that any further." Questions if Mr Hague had holidayed with Mr Myers or given him gifts were rebuffed by his spin doctors.
A statement from Mr Myers "categorically" denied any improper relationship.
But the pressure on Mr Hague from his own party increased. Former chairman Lord Tebbit said the one-time leader had been "naive at best, foolish at worst".
John Redwood, who Mr Hague once replaced as Welsh Secretary, said making the personal statement invited criticism.
Writing on his blog Mr Redwood said: "I have studiously ignored the rumours and stories circulating on other websites and at a fairly empty Westminster.
"Today I cannot ignore it, as Mr Hague has issued an unusual statement and invited comment. It confirms he has shared hotel rooms with a young male assistant...
