Another Feature Film by Ang Lee: "Brokeback Borders"
From legendary director Ang Lee comes another epic love story between two rancheros.
One is a soft-spoken Texan with a troubled past. The other is a former Mexican executive with an extravagant wife. They met on the plains of Texas, and the rest, as they say, is the stuff of legends.
Their love is so intense that the prosaic Texan is willing to sell out his own country to the multinationals and the multiculturalists while his Mexican lover plots to reclaim the northern territories "lost" by his ancestors.
"Brokeback Borders" has it all: romance, intrigue and tragedy. Tragedy because in the end, a once mighty super-power is reduced to Third World status by the uncontrolled influx of illegal immigrants.
This film is not yet rated.

Los Angeles: City of and for Illegal Aliens
The good, law-abiding and tax-paying citizens of Los Angeles had voted years ago to ban the awful leaf-blowers, which are ubiquitously used by lazy illegal alien street-sweepers. Guess what? The illegal alien street-sweepers rose up and lobbied City Hall, and now the ban has been lifted. Yes, illegal aliens not only had the audacity to lobby our crooked politicians but had actually prevailed.
And now they are strutting their stuff. Whenever these lazy illegal alien sweepers see people in business suits in the civic center approaching them, they actually increase the power of their leaf blowers so as to kick up sand and dirt into our faces. Viva La Raza: Not only are they out-reproducing us, but they are also hastening their inevitable demographic super-majority by killing us off with pollution. Use a broom, you lazy bum. There ain't no leaves in the civic center--just dirt and homeless excrements. Use a broom; it's good exercise.

Good Bye and Good Riddance (?) to "the Maestro"
Originally posted at THE FAIRBANK REPORT on 04 November 2005
Good bye and perhaps good riddance to Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Alan Greenspan. He is scheduled to leave the Fed at the end of January 2006. Sycophants in government and the mass media have hailed him as "the maestro," "the genius" and other equally nauseating, honey-dripping terms of endearment.
Let's look at his recent records to see if these accolades are justified. In 1996, Greenspan correctly foresaw the "irrational exuberance" of an overheated, speculative stock market. Yet, he did nothing to cool down the market. A few interest rate hikes in 1997, 1998 and 1999 might have avoided the crash of the stock market from 2000-2003. In fact, Greespan probably exacerbated the 2000-2001 recession by belatedly and continuously raising rates after the March 2000 bubble had burst. It was only after the attacks of 9/11/2001 that the Fed began to cut interest rates.
And then there's his recent "froth" in the real estate market commentary. Duh!, as the Valley Girl would say. Under his chairmanship, the Fed has failed to regulate the banks and other financial institutions, which have been pushing dangerous exotic loans, e.g., interest-only, piggy-back, 100%+-financing mortgage loans. In overheated housing markets such as California, Boston and New York, these creative financing schemes now account for the majority of outstanding loans! People who have no business buying houses are purchasing them at enormously inflated prices. After all, it's not their money; they're playing with OPM, other people's money.
The housing bubbles in California, Boston and New York will burst. And the consequences and ramifications will be ten folds worse than the bursting of the Nasdaq bubble. Yet, Dr. Greenspan, "the maestro"--nay "the genius"--has done very little to prevent excesses in the housing markets by reining in rogue lenders.
Even if the Fed acts aggressively today, it is a day late and a dollar short. The upcoming housing bubble-induced recession, perhaps even a small depression, should be called Economic Hurricane Alan in honor of the maestro, and like other hurricanes, this one will pack a wallop and cause a world of hurt...

Young UCLA Alumni and Students Fight Aging University Dinosaurs and Institutions
What a difference a decade makes! When I was an undergraduate at UCLA during the early 1990's, it was accepted without question that UCLA professors, for the most part, were extreme leftists and that there was nothing we could do about it. We simply rolled our eyes and repeated the same crap on our blue-books during exam in order to pass and move on.
Now younger Bruins are more vocal, more audacious and more conservative, perhaps reflecting a smarter and more qualified student body because of the official (unfortunately, not practical) end of affirmative action/quota.
The featured link is a testament to the power of the blog. Students have long been "prof shopping" by words of mouth, and now they have a central place to continue the tradition.

ALITO WIFE LEAVES HEARING IN TEARS AFTER DEM ATTACKWed Jan 11 2006 17:22:11 ET**Exclusive**
Judge Samuel A. Alito’s wife Martha left the confirmation hearing room in tears this evening, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) apologized to the Judge’s family for the behavior of his fellow committee members during the course of the last three days.
Sen. Graham said: “Judge Alito, I am sorry that you’ve had to go through this. I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this.” Democrats on the Judiciary Committee have attacked Judge Samuel A. Alito over his membership in Concerned Alumni of Princeton and his involvement in the Vanguard case.
One senior Republican in the hearing room said of the situation: “After three full days of attacks against her husband’s character, Mrs. Alito had enough. Democrat behavior during this hearing has not only been wrong, it’s been embarrassing. Ted Kennedy is nothing but a bully.”

Who's the Girly Man Now?
Volte Face: As recently as two months ago, California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, passionately pushed for fiscal restraints and accountability. Rebuffed by the voters in last November's special election, he is now giving the people what they want and can ill afford: more, more, and more spending on pet projects. Yesterday, the governor outlined a 10-year $225 billion plan to improve and build new schools, courthouses, roads and water delivery systems.
How does the governor plan to pay for all these nice and shiny things? Borrow the money from Wall Street. Why prioritize when you can borrow. Why practice restraint when you can borrow. Why not cater to every interest group when you can borrow.
What happens when the bills come due? Well, Arnold, Maria and their gaggle of kids will be long gone from the statehouse when the invoices arrive in the mail. Why worry now when you can pass the buck to someone else and to the next generation.
In a way, we can't blame the governor. He tried to work with the legislators, and they rebuffed him. He went to the people, and they rebuffed him. Now he's just giving the uneducated voters of California what they deserve: fuzzy math, more debt and general fiscal sloppiness.
God help us all.

Notes from the Grave: Miners Left Messages of Comfort to Kins
There is something eerily tragic about knowing your own unnatural death. We have extensively covered the execution of Nguyen Tuong Van (see November and December 2005 archives), who penned his own funeral arrangements. Now, the West Virginian miners' notes to their loved ones surface. Very tragic and sad indeed.

Robertson says Sharon's stroke is God's punishment
The Reverend Pat Robertson says Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's massive stroke could be God's punishment for giving up Israeli territory. The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network told viewers of "The 700 Club" that Sharon was "dividing God's land," even though the Bible says doing so invites "God's enmity." Robertson added, "I would say woe to any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course." He noted that former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated. Robertson said God's message is, "This land belongs to me. You'd better leave it alone."

Did KTLA Channel 5 DUMP Stephanie Edwards?
Rumors and furore abound among Los Angeles viewers of the 117th tournament of the Rose Parade. Veteran co-presenter Stephanie Edwards's seat in the broadcast booth was filled by a Canadian with a politically correct surname, Michaela Pereira, while Stephanie was relegated to "reporting" from the sidelines in the pouring rain. Was this a mutually agreed-to arrangement? Or was Stephanie dumped for a younger Canadian?!
Local talk radio callers have expressed concern that Stephanie was unceremoniously dumped for a younger and more politically correct alternative. If this is true, it would be a sad commentary on the state of affairs of the already dismal Los Angeles media.
