Chinese-Indonesian Huang Jia Jia's Amazing Voice

The best female vocal of this song ever -- better than Deng Lijun and even, dare I say, Cai Qin, the Queen Bee herself!

By the way, the Hanyu pinyin transliteration is all screwed up in this video.

CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE!!!

This just might be the saddest news you will hear today—a giant panda, living in China's Jinan Zoo, died after accidently being gassed with carbon monoxide and chlorine.

An autopsy released on Tuesday revealed that the 21-year-old panda, Quan Quan, inhaled the gases that were being used to disinfect a nearby former air raid shelter. The toxic gases caused her lungs to collapse and despite attempts to save her, Quan Quan died in the hospital.

Zoo officials say that the gases had come through ventilation pipes that the zoo shared with the raid shelter. Activists are already pointing to Quan Quan's death as another indication of how zoos should improve their treatment of animals in captivity.

"These pandas are being bred for a life in captivity," said Kati Loeffler, a veterinary advisor for the International Fund for Animal Welfare. "Why are they being bred? Just so they can circulate through zoos and live next to old air raid shelters?"

As pandas are on the endangered species list, Quan Quan was reportedly considered a “heroic mother” in China, because she has given birth to seven cubs. (via the Los Angeles Times)

NO TO "KIMCHI" IMPERIALISM

Cambodia Bans Marriage to Korean Men

The Cambodian government has decided to temporarily forbid marriages between Cambodian women and Korean men to curb the mail-order bride business. Phnom Penh says Korean men often fail to observe the month-long consideration period for which they are required to stay in Cambodia to undergo an interview and a review of documents.

A Korean government source on Friday said the Cambodian government informed the Korean Embassy in Phnom Penh of the ban in an official letter on March 5.

The measure was taken after a woman was arrested for lining up no fewer than 25 Cambodian girls as potential brides for a Korean man to choose from, according to the source.

The Korean Embassy suspended receipt of applications for consular international marriage certificates on March 8, and will also temporarily suspend a settlement support program for immigrant spouses from Cambodia on April 1.

"International marriages should occur after free dating and the couples should decide on their own which country to live in after marriage. But Koreans, who account for 60 percent of international marriages in Cambodia, mostly meet Cambodian women through matchmakers," a government official said.

The arrest of the woman prompted the Cambodian government to enforce the ban amid deteriorating sentiment about Koreans among locals, he added.

An 18-year-old summer intern at a factory affiliated with the Foxconn Technology Group was found dead on Tuesday after falling from a six-story company dormitory in Guangdong Province.

The death adds to a string of worker suicides at factories run by Foxconn, a supplier to Apple Inc.

LCD maker Chimei Innolux Corp said yesterday the man started the internship on July 2 but was being let go because he failed to show up for work for several days.

Cheesy Video for a Good Cause...

It's a typically cheesy Asian-style short film. The final sequence has been over used (over-abused?) in Asian films and drama.

But, hey, it's for a good cause, and it's Asian. So we're featuring it.

So proud to be Californian. The Japanese students got a lot of hugs in the Bay Area (Alcatrez) compared to the public reaction in the Sinitic cultures of China, Korea and Japan!

Hot Chick of the Week: Fan Bingbing

Mainland Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. We love her in He Ping's Wheat (2009), a docu-drama based on the battle of Changping in 260 BCE between the kingdoms of Qin and Zhao.

Yes, she's got a nose job and an eye job, but who in Asia doesn't?

Asian chicks are so hott and cool...
