To Protect and Serve...

As dear readers are aware, this Fairbank Report has severely criticized and ebulliently praised China over the years.  After all, fairness is implied in our name.  So here's an "aww story" from Shanghai, courtesy of http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?cid=1103&MainCatID=11&id=20131008000101 .  Please note that no such effort can ever be expected from the police thugs in the USA.

The Shanghai police force has been praised for its thoughtfulness and care in dealing with the tidal wave of tourists passing through the city during China's weeklong National Day holidays. They have gone so far as to form a human wall for crossing pedestrians to box out aggressive drivers.
If you walk to the Bund — the famous district decorated with European buildings and architecture from the old British and American settlements — you will notice two things: a scattered sea of tourists, and an orderly array of arm-linked police officers. When the light turns green, the officers stretch across the crosswalk on both sides, creating a human canal across which pedestrians are ferried. When the light turns red, they fold back to the sidewalk, reports the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
The officers apparently repeat the procedure all day, though they reportedly said that such extreme measures would not be necessary if visitors obeyed traffic laws. The city saw as many as 4 million visitors on the fourth day of the national vacation.
"This is just like when police officers escort me when crossing the street after school," said one elementary school student.

Armed robber in Korea gives himself up after victim reads from the Bible

An armed robber in Korea gave himself up after his alleged victim, a Christian, convinced him of the error of his ways by reading from the Bible.
Ling Cho reportedly walked into the English language institute in south-eastern Ulsan Jungbu, South Korea, when the religious teacher was alone, threatening her with a knife and demanding money.
The teacher instead asked him why he was robbing her and listened as he explained how he fell into a life of crime, getting divorced last year and struggling with financial problems since, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The teacher then read to him from the Bible, and Cho apologised for trying to rob her, after which she gave him an MP3 player filled with gospel tunes, before he left.
But he returned 20 minutes later, in tears, and asked the teacher to report him to the police.
When she refused to turn him in, Cho called the authorities himself and demanded to be arrested.
He now faces a maximum five years in jail for attempted robbery. (ANI)
