In the sorry saga of Siu Yau-wai, the 12-year-old boy who has lived in Hong Kong without identity documents for nine years, the government turns out to be the only party that has behaved with a measure of humanity and legal propriety. It's so rare for such a thing to happen it deserves to be taken notice of when it does.
The case came to light thanks to unionist legislator Chan Yuen-han calling a widely covered press conference to highlight the boy's plight. Chan might have had a good motive, but she failed to anticipate the levels of anti-mainland sentiment the case would provoke. In retrospect, that was not that hard to predict. Yet, the ugly backlash surely must have contributed to Yau-wai and his family's decision to leave Hong Kong and go back to the mainland. Chan clearly bears direct responsibility for the hasty manner in which she exposed the child and his grandmother to a media maelstrom.
Xenophobic groups organised rallies to condemn the family. Some protesters carried photos of young Yau-wai to denounce him as a criminal. They also criticised the Immigration Department for issuing a temporary permit to Yau-wai and protested outside a school that helped assess his scholastic standards, claiming he deserved no right of abode or a local school place. The elementary fact that he wasn't offered the right of abode or a school place seemed to have completely escaped the protesters.
If nothing else, those xenophobes bring out the worst and ugliest of Hong Kong people. So it was left to officials to take care of the kid with some measure of humanity. The temporary permit was given to him as a way to make sure he wouldn't be arrested in the streets. His grandmother was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting others in breach of condition of stay and granted bail. A probe was opened to determine whether there might be a basis to allow Yau-wai to stay in Hong Kong.
Now that he has decided to leave Hong Kong, the department has granted permission to his grandmother to take him back to Shenzhen even though she is on bail. Given the disgraceful and disgusting way he has been treated by the Hong Kong public, who in his right mind would want to stay?
We wish him a happier life on the mainland.

Down with Traitorous HK Protesters!
For 150 years, the running dogs of Hong Kong had obediently accepted harsh British rule without question. The Governor of Hong Kong was appointed by the unelected Queen of England. There was no legislative body. The Governor was the law.
Now young running dogs of imperialism in Hong Kong are demanding so-called democracy. They are egged on and funded by MI-6, the CIA, and the Kuomintang (KMT) of Taiwan, all of whom fear China's rise and seek to destabilize it.
Hong Kongers have enjoyed legislative representation in the form the Hong Kong Legislative Council. And unlike the Governor of British Hong Kong, the Chief Executive, under China's generous "one country, two systems," is elected by an electoral college of 1,200 men and women.
Clearly, the troublemakers are out to destroy for the sake of destruction. Some are even seen waving the old British colonial flag! Such insolence! Such traitorous behaviour!
Alas, the Chinese government is strongly supported by its 1.3 billion people, and in fact, the majority of the people of Hong Kong is opposed to the thuggish mobs rallying in central Hong Kong.
Foreign penetrators and evil saboteurs SHALL NOT SUCCEED. Aiwo Zhonghua!

t's a scene familiar to all parents of young children: you're in a busy shopping street and your child decides they just can't hold it in any longer. But one couple's decision to let their child relieve himself has caused a huge schism on Chinese social media.
By now, it seems, the entire Chinese internet is familiar with what happened on a crowded Hong Kong shopping street. A mother holds a nappy while her two-year-old squats and pees. A passerby snaps pictures which then get shared online. Someone else shares a videofrom the scene, which shows a crowd confronting the boy's parents in a physical scuffle, while the boy's mum argues that she couldn't get her son to the toilet in time. The images have drawn more than one million re-posts on Sina Weibo, China's biggest social network, making it the top trending topic.
Why has this one child's act caused so much upset? Allowing a child under 12 to "obey the call of nature in any public street" is illegal in Hong Kong and could land parents with a 2,000 Hong Kong Dollar ($250; £150) fine. But the on-line chatter has focused on the fact that this family were tourists from mainland China, rather than being locals. "For Hong Kongers, people might think from time to time that mainlanders are less mannered," says Martin Yip of BBC Chinese. Charmaine Chui, a UK resident who was born in Hong Kong, told BBC Trending she feels 'ashamed' to have witnessed mainland tourists peeing in shopping centres and restaurants. "Hong Kong is a beautiful, modern city - what do these people think of it?" she says.
In mainland China, there has also been criticism of the parents' behaviour, including from Chinese state media. But there has also been outrage with Hong Kong residents for being so critical. "It's a two-year-old kid who can't hold it... can't you even be considerate on this?" posted one user. One mainland website commissioned a poll of internet users in which 64% said they can understand the need for children to pee in public in certain situations. An anonymous user of the popular Tianya site was so outraged by the reaction in Hong Kong that he's campaigning to stage a mass protest. "Bring your children to Hong Kong and let them urinate in Hong Kong's streets," he urges his countrymen. "Let's see who will come and take photos."
