FR Endorses Dr. Chee Soon Juan in the Bukit Batok (Singapore) By-election
Dr Chee Soon Juan of the Singapore Democratic Party, a one-time Fairbank Report's Person of the Year, is running in a by-election in Singapore. Election date: TBD by the prime minister. The long-suffering Dr Chee was imprisoned for many years and then made bankrupt by the PAP government. He and his family could have had a very comfortable life in Singapore given his credentials, thus making his struggles for justice all the more moving and meaningful...

Singapore Democrats The amount was raised in less than two weeks through the sales of his books as well as donations. The IPTO officials said that upon receiving the money, it will forward the funds to Mr Lee and Mr Goh, and the two former prime ministers will take a formal vote to agree to annul the bankruptcy order. According to Ms Lydia Loh from the IPTO, the Official Assignee will then take the decision to officially annul the bankruptcy order. The entire process will take one to two months. Chee Soon Juan: Courage Personified
Dr Chee, an Australian-trained psychiatrist, could have lived a very easy life in Singapore, a country that handsomely rewards technocrats and technical experts. But Dr Chee chose persecution and poverty over personal comfort in the defense of democratic principles. He, like so many other opposition leaders in Singapore, was made bankrupt by the Singaporean government.
We wish him well but know it's going to be a tough slog -- both personally and professionally.
